Gülbeden Kulbay is an interdisciplinary artist based in Stockholm whose practice critically examines what it means to remain human within a capitalist society. Her work asks how we can preserve our shared humanity and resist the isolation that the system tends to produce. Through participatory performance in public space, Kulbay treats art as an inclusive force, a platform where people can meet, reflect, and affirm the human in a world that constantly seeks to constrain it. Working site-specifically and intuitively, she creates meeting places where the performative act becomes restorative and healing.

In Rejmyre, Kulbay is developing Edible Ecologies and Rituals of Care for Rejmyre, an interdisciplinary project uniting performance, community art, and installation with local personal stories and food. The project explores how shared meals and growing can function as a form of tropism — an organic, emotional, and social adaptation to one’s surroundings — using food as a non-hierarchical language rooted in Rejmyre’s history and ecology.

At the heart of the project is the Refuging Pavilion, which Kulbay uses as a culinary laboratory and open studio. Two strands of collaboration anchor the work: at Rejmyre skola, students explore how food carries stories, tending raised beds alongside residents of Berggårdens elderly care home and following the plants’ own tropism toward light; and at Berggården itself, personal memories gathered from elders are transformed into edible artworks, sensory “capsules”, served and shared across generations in a communal Memory Meal. Public rituals with local residents extend the work further, with recipes, stories, and methods documented along the way.

Begun in spring 2026, Edible Ecologies and Rituals of Care for Rejmyre will continue through 2027 and 2028.

The Party—An Edible Exhibition A collaborative project with the preschool class at Rejmyre School and the Berggården senior living home, set in the kitchen garden that the preschool class planted in April. Rejmyre is known for, among other things, its glassworks. For the refreshments (fika), I used the glassworks’ original molds for various drinking glasses and awards to cast jelly in an array of flavors and colors. We ate the glasses and became part of Rejmyre’s cultural history through the flavors of blueberry, lemon, blackcurrant, strawberry, lime, elderflower, and raspberry—rendered in the foundational colors for which the glassworks is renowned. I also created edible glass marbles set on beds of produce harvested from the kitchen garden: parsley, lettuce, ice plant (kärleksört), and lemon balm. Throughout my residency, I collected coffee grounds from the senior home and from Malin, the preschool teacher. On a bed of these coffee grounds, I cultivated pea shoots from Grey peas (gråärtor), which I gave them in exchange—serving as a meaningful way to foster social connections.
